Offline Activities

  • Find an ad with phrases like "no payments for the first ___ months" or "no interest until 20__". Talk with about what this means. Research what happens if you are late for or miss a payment. Discuss the pros and cons of these payment methods.
  • Work on a creative building project, using Lego or other building materials.
  • Ask adults about their work. Questions might include: When do you use math in your work? Do you use fractions or decimals? When do you count, calculate or measure? Do you use statistics, graphs, tables or charts? When do you use reading and writing in your work? What education or training do you need for your work? If your child is interested in pursuing this career, look into the high school prerequisites needed for this work.
  • Use a recipe to make a favourite family meal
  • Play word/math games such as scrabble, crossword puzzles, word searches, sudoku,
  • Read/write comics, graphic novels, maps, magazines, pamphlets
  • Start a family book club, discuss your favourite characters or parts
  • Call an older relative. Ask them to teach you a song or tell a story from their childhood
  • Describe the place you are in right now from the point of view of something else. This “something else" could be an object, or another person, it can be whatever you choose.
  • Learn a card game of Crib or create your own and teach a family member or friend.
  • Look at the breakdown of the price of gas posted on the gas pump. What percentage is GST? What percentage is other taxes? How much would you pay for 40 litres of gas and how much of that is tax?
  • Talk about different ways people get paid—salary, wages, overtime, contract work, etc. Look at a pay statement and discuss the different deductions—EI, CCP, income tax, benefits, etc. What are these deductions used for? You may wish to research some of these.
  • Watch a documentary with your student on a topic that interests them. Ask them about what they saw and how it applies to their own life (e.g., Did you learn anything new? Why is this topic important for people to know about? What is the main issue? Can you tell me more about ___? Can you put what you learned into practice?)
  • As you go through your shopping list, involve your student in making decisions. Which is the better buy? Compare similar products (e.g., name brands vs. store brands) of breakfast cereal. Compare ingredients, nutritional information, quality, packaging and prices. Do you think they would taste the same? Which brand would you buy and why? Did packaging or coupons on the boxes influence your decision?
  • Create some skipping, bike, hacky sack, scooter, skateboard, dribbling, volleying, etc. challenges for self or others.
