2025 Municipal General Election
As part of the municipal general election, Calgarians vote for their school board trustees. A general election takes place every four years as legislated under the
Local Authorities Election Act. The Board of Trustees of The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) is charged with the responsibility to govern the affairs of the CBE under the
Education Act, and advocates for students to ensure education is given high priority.
The citizens of Calgary will elect trustees to govern The Calgary Board of Education on their behalf during the 2025 municipal election which will be on
Monday, Oct. 20, 2025.

Education Act
The Education Act specifies goals for Alberta’s Early Childhood Services to Grade 12 (ECS-12) education system and identifies the roles and responsibilities of the Ministry, school boards, charter schools, private schools, teachers, parents and students.

The Local Authorities Election Act governs municipal elections by establishing procedures around campaigning, voting and counting of votes.

Police Information Check Requirement
At the Dec. 17, 2024 public board meeting, the Board of Trustees passed a
Police Information Check Bylaw.
The Alberta government initiated amendments to the
Local Authorities Election Act through the
Municipal Affairs Statutes Amendment Act, which came into force on Oct. 31, 2024. One of the amendments to the Local Authorities Election Act provides elected authorities the opportunity to consider requiring candidates to provide a criminal record check as part of their nomination papers.
Ward System Bylaw
At the Dec. 17, 2024 public board meeting, the Board of Trustees passed a Ward System Bylaw that to provide for the Nomination and Election of Trustees by Wards and to Determine the Boundaries of the Wards.
Legal Status of the CBE Board of Trustees
The school board is a corporate entity created under the authority of the
Education Act.
- Each school division in Alberta is a statutory corporation established under section 77 of the
Education Act.
- Each trustee elected to the board of trustees is a director of the corporation.
The board of trustees is granted many types of authority to enable it to fulfil its mandate to provide kindergarten to Grade 12 education within the jurisdiction. These powers relate to providing educational services.

2021 Muncipal General Election
Information about the 2021 election, candidates and voting results is available on the
City of Calgary election website.
As required by Part 5.1, Municipal Election Finance and Contribution Disclosure, of the Local Authorities Election Act, candidates for the 2021 General Election were required to file their campaign finance disclosure statements on or before March 1, 2022.
