May. 11, 2023

Yellow school bus service levels and proposed fees for the 2023-24 school year are now available. Service levels will remain the same as the current school year. We will move to one fee for all riders.

  • Registration is available using your MyCBE account. (If you do not already have an account, learn how to create one.)
  • Families must register by Sunday, June 11 for students to be added to routes for the start of the next school year.
  • We continue to accept registrations after the deadline; however, students are added to the closest existing stop with available space. Processing times could be up to six weeks at the beginning of the school year due to volume.

As part of our long-term, sustainable transportation system we no longer subsidize the costs of transportation from the larger CBE budget. We continue to ensure the delivery of safe and efficient transportation for students.

My 1st Ride

The CBE offers a school bus orientation program for first-time riders and their parents, called My 1st Ride. The program consists of a 20-minute presentation followed by a short ride on a school bus.

Sessions are free bus you must register in advance and take place on May 27 and 28. Learn more and register today.

ZPass

For the 2023-24 school year we will discontinue the use of the ZPass for students.

Alternate Addresses

We’ve heard from families that they would like more flexibility to access bus stops and routes to support childcare arrangements and changing family schedules. Once again this year, CBE Transportation will allow families to add a second address to their transportation registration to have access to two bus stops and/or routes.

Note | All addresses must be within the attendance area for the school and outside the walk zone. Maps can be found on the school profiles on the CBE website. The information collected from parents informs bus route planning, but does not guarantee a stop at the exact location requested.

To participate in the pilot, you must:

  • Register for transportation in MyCBE by the June 11, 2023 deadline.
  • Fill in the Request for Alternate Address form in MyCBE and provide one additional address and schedule for your child.

CBE Transportation will review each request to determine if the request can be accommodated. Families will be notified of the decision within six weeks of application. If it is approved, the second address will be used as we are creating new bus routes.

The cost of this request is $110.

Looking Ahead - Changes for 2024-25 School Year

The provincial budget announcement on Feb. 28 contained an increase in funding for transportation, as well as new expectations for service level provided by school boards. Beginning in September 2024, provincial walk zone distances will be lowered to 1 km for students in kindergarten to Grade 6 and 2 km for Grades 7 to 12 students. This will have a number of implications for CBE Transportation.

During the next school year we will be working with school communities to determine the specific impact on their transportation numbers and potential changes to bell times. We know that congregated stops will continue to be used for alternative programs.

We look forward to working with Alberta Education and yellow bus service providers to fully implement the changes by September 2024.
