At the March 21, 2023 public board meeting, the Calgary Board of Education Board of Trustees approved the
Three-Year School Capital Plan 2024-27 requesting new construction and major modernization projects from the provincial government.
This plan includes requests for six new schools and nine modernizations over the next three years. The estimated cost of all of the projects is up to $352.2 million.
New schools are necessary in growing communities to allow students to attend school closer to home.
In recent years, the Board of Trustees has also placed an emphasis on modernization requests. These projects involve the renovation of whole or part of a school building to enhance both current and future educational programs. This can include upgrades to Career and Technology Studies/Foundation spaces, enhancement to Learning Common areas and overall improvements to the building.
The Calgary Board of Education currently has two other active construction projects underway. Students are expected to move into Prairie Sky School in the community of Skyview Ranch next month and the North Calgary high school in the community of Coventry Hills is scheduled to open this fall.
A new middle school for the community of Evanston was announced in March 2022. Construction on this project has not yet begun and the opening date is still to be determined.
The Calgary Board of Education does not decide when new schools are built. The provincial government determines where, when and how new schools are built. Each year, school boards submit a Three-Year School Capital Plan to Alberta Education. The plan identifies priorities for new school construction and major modernizations.
Alberta Education requires the plan to be submitted by April 1, 2023.
