On Oct. 31, 2024 the provincial government introduced Bill 27, which is proposed legislation regarding amendments to the Education Act including:
- Consent and notification of preferred name and pronoun changes
- Parental notification and opt-in requirements
- Approval of materials related to human sexuality, gender identity and sexual orientation
- Education continuity during public health and states of emergencies
The proposed amendments for the first three points would come into effect upon proclamation, which would be anticipated for Sept. 1, 2025. If passed, the amendments for the fourth point would come into force on Jan. 1, 2025.
In addition, the government introduced Bill 29, the Fairness and Safety in Sport Act. If passed, Bill 29 would require organizations offering amateur competitive sport, including school authorities, to ensure female leagues and divisions are limited to only female-born athletes.
