CALGARY – The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) is honoured to recognize the Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre (SKCAC) with a Lighthouse Award. The award will be presented at the Public Board Meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 5.
Since its creation, SKCAC has been a leader in addressing issues related to child abuse. They believe the entire community owns the responsibility to value and support the well-being of children, youth and families.
The Youth Champion Initiative within the CBE is an excellent example of how the SKCAC advocates for safe and supportive communities. The centre collaborates with the Canadian Mental Health Association, school administration and teachers to support student leaders in identifying a topic and developing an action plan to address the issues, promote healthy relationships as well as positive mental health awareness.
The youth champions meet four times a year to expand their learning, create action plans and strategize together to take meaningful messages back to their schools. During the 2016-17 school year, the Youth Champion Initiative was supported in 18 high schools in Calgary and area. There are 13 CBE schools involved this year.
The CBE’s Lighthouse Awards program recognizes an organization’s contributions to the CBE, its schools and its programs.
Date Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2017Time 12 p.m.Where CBE Education Centre, 1221 – 8th Street. S.W.
