CALGARY — Altadore School students, staff, parents and community are celebrating the grand opening and Harvest Festival of the Altadore School & Community Edible Garden.

The Altadore School & Community Edible Garden is Calgary’s first large-scale school and community edible garden. The organic, ecological garden is located on a quarter-acre of public school land and includes raised-bed food gardening for 16 school classes, 32 community garden beds, and many common-garden areas including a large for-charity food garden, small fruit beds, orchard, herbs spirals, pollinator and perennial edible gardens, and model food forests.

Students have harvested more than 400 lbs of produce to date and have made donations to Inn from the Cold and the Calgary Drop-In Centre.

Media are invited to interview students before the school’s Opening Celebration and Assembly.

Media are also invited to attend the school’s community celebration event, featuring a soup supper prepared using produce from the garden, a tour and an art exhibit of soup bowls painted by each student.
