Acknowledging Black History Month at the CBE

February is Black History Month. The Calgary Board of Education recognizes Black History Month and the contributions of Black Canadians in communities across the country.

This year, The City of Calgary’s theme is "Black Resistance." The theme explores how Black people have resisted historical and ongoing systemic oppression. Additionally, the Government of Canada’s theme is: “Ours to tell”. This theme represents both an opportunity to engage in open dialogue and a commitment to learning more about the stories Black communities in Canada have to tell about their histories, successes, sacrifices and triumphs.

Both themes provide many learning opportunities and can be brought into the classroom by sharing the stories of Black communities in Canada. Students can be introduced at all grade levels through diverse texts and perspectives, hold film screenings, and conduct lessons on civil rights leaders.

This learning will be shared throughout the month. Follow your school’s social media accounts to see how they honour Black History Month. These posts will also be shared on CBE’s Twitter, Instagram and Facebook pages.

CBE remains committed to advancing equity and antiracism within the school system. Including diverse perspectives in schools, including Black voices, resources, and texts, is aligned with our Education Plan key action to bring a system-wide implementation of strategies to advance antiracism, diversity and inclusion.
