The Board of Trustees of the Calgary Board of Education and CUPE Local 40 have ratified a new collective agreement.
"Employees who work in facility and environmental services play a vital role in the success of the CBE,” said Laura Hack, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “Their commitment ensures that our facilities teams create the best learning environments for students."
The collective agreement involves approximately 800 unionized employees at the CBE. This includes a range of professionals such as cleaners, facility operators, heavy duty mechanics, painters, locksmiths and other important seasonal workers involved in activities like snow removal and grounds maintenance.
"Our members are the backbone of schools’ day-to-day operations," said Clay Gordon, President of CUPE Local 40. "This agreement recognizes their invaluable contributions, and our shared goal of cultivating a work environment that supports the contributions these employees make to our school communities."
The new collective agreement includes general wage increases of 2.75%. It also includes market adjustments for positions that are well below the market. The agreement, a four-year term from Sept. 1, 2020 to Aug. 31, 2024, also introduces non-monetary benefits. These include the addition of an option to allocate annual spending credits to a Wellness Spending Account, and a change to give employees up to May 1 to establish their vacation schedule.
The updated collective agreement will be posted on the CBE collective agreements web page once available.
