CALGARY – The Board of Trustees is pleased to announce Christopher Usih as the new Chief Superintendent of Schools for the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) effective Dec. 17, 2018.
Currently, Mr. Usih is an Associate Director of Education at the Toronto District School Board (TDSB). He holds a Master of Education degree from the University of Manitoba and additional qualifications in mathematics and computer science. He has more than 28 years of experience as an educator. He began teaching in an Indigenous community in Northern Manitoba but has spent the majority of his career in diverse roles with the TDSB including teacher, principal, and other executive roles.
"The Board of Trustees has chosen a proven educational leader who brings decades of experience with the Toronto District School Board – the largest school Board in Canada," said Trina Hurdman, Chair, Board of Trustees. "We are confident in Mr. Usih’s ability to lead the Calgary Board of Education into the future."
Mr. Usih has a well-earned reputation for getting things done with integrity and efficiency. His leadership has included key decision-making to provide the necessary supports to help students realize success. During his time as a leader with the TDSB, he led a number of strategic initiatives including providing support for student transitions, implementing strategies to promote high school completion and developing partnerships to support students in a variety of post-secondary pathways.
He is highly regarded for his commitment to equity, raising academic standards and addressing achievement and opportunity gaps. His responsive and collaborative approach has brought change to how students are supported.
“I am excited to join the Calgary Board of Education, which is known as a leader in kindergarten to Grade 12 education across Canada," said Christopher Usih. "I am looking forward to building relationships with the Board of Trustees, staff, students, families and the Calgary community. I am committed to student and staff achievement, well-being and continuous improvement. Through our collective efforts, I am confident we can build upon CBE’s successes while facing any challenges.”
The Board of Trustees would like to thank Chief Superintendent David Stevenson for his leadership and his unwavering commitment to public education during his more than 40 years of service with the Calgary Board of Education. The Board has been working closely with Administration to ensure a smooth transition. Chief Superintendent Stevenson’s last day will be Dec.16.
