May is Asian Heritage Month in Canada, a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions, experiences, and impact of individuals of Asian heritage in Canada and around the world. According to the 2021 Census, more than seven million people in Canada reported having Asian origins, or about 19.3 per cent of the population. This is a large and diverse group that has contributed to every aspect of life in Canada.
CBE students and staff acknowledge Asian Heritage Month by learning about and celebrating traditional and contemporary Asian-Canadian culture. Students learn about the different journeys and histories of Asian communities and people, including the numerous achievements and contributions of Asian-Canadians.
For example, Captain Nichola Goddard School staff and students are creating a culture that embraces diversity and uplifts the voices and experiences of all of its students. During Asian Heritage Month, school staff highlight the lived experiences and histories of Asian Canadians from diverse backgrounds and identities to continue to foster an anti-racist school culture. Teachers and other school-based staff work hard to help everyone feel accepted and included in their school.
“We welcome many cultures to Calgary, creating a beautiful variety,” said one staff member. “We have a first-hand opportunity to learn about corners of the world where we have never been and may never go.
Captain Nichola Goddard School has shown that when we amplify and support the voices of people who have historically been silenced and erased, we celebrate the beauty and strength of a more diverse and inclusive Canada.
