CALGARY — Students in the Performing and Visual Arts Program at Central Memorial High School are working together with the United Way on a contemporary rendition of the musical Oliver! Based on the novel Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens from1835, the musical addresses societal treatment of the disadvantaged. The updated version tells the story of Oliver, an abused and homeless youth, and the Tent City community that he meets up with in East Hastings, Vancouver.
The cast and crew are working with members of the United Way and their #UNIGNORABLE campaign to raise awareness of those living in poverty and unsafe conditions.
Approximately 300 junior high school students and their teachers will attend a performance and learn about services offered by the United Way to assist youth and families that find themselves struggling financially, losing their homes, or living in unsafe conditions.
CMHS students and staff from the United Way will be available after the performance for interviews.
