Board of Trustees Approves Names for CBE Schools
The Calgary Board of Education is excited to open four new schools in the 2022-23 school year. The buildings are still under construction, but principals have been hired and work is well underway to prepare to welcome students. The Board of Trustees has approved the following names for each of the new schools.
Mahogany School is the name of the new elementary school in the community of Mahogany. It is the first CBE school being built in the community and shares the community name. It will serve students in kindergarten to Grade 4. Tracy Kohan is the principal and Lisa Patten is the assistant principal.
Prairie Sky School is the name of the new elementary/middle school in the northeast community of Skyview Ranch. The name recognizes that the community of Skyview Ranch is located on the easternmost boundary of the City of Calgary, immediately beside prairie lands with immense views of the open sky. The school will offer kindergarten to Grade 8 programming when it opens in the 2022-23 school year, and kindergarten to Grade 9 programming in 2023-24. Mona Bains is the principal and Michael Pierce is the assistant principal.
Bayside School is the name of the second elementary school in the southeast community of Auburn Bay. The name reflects the community’s desire to consider a name that closely represents the community of Auburn Bay. The school will offer kindergarten to Grade 4 programming when it opens this fall and will expand to include Grade 5 in 2023-24. Darby McAsey is the principal and Calleigh Harder is the assistant principal.
Lakeshore School is the new middle school also in Auburn Bay. The name reflects the characteristics of the Auburn Bay community and complements other community-based names of schools in the area. The school will offer programming for Grades 5-9 when it opens in the fall and will shift to Grades 6-9 in 2023-24 to align with the grade configuration at Bayside School. Ian Fero is the principal and Nathan DeBoer is the assistant principal.
The Board of Trustees selects school names after gathering stakeholder input on possible names through the school naming committee and a community survey. The school naming committees are comprised of CBE Trustees, parent and/or community representatives and members of CBE administration.
