In October, Marlborough Elementary School began offering daily breakfasts to students as part of Alberta Education’s School Nutrition Pilot Program. As part of the program, Marlborough School receives 100 breakfasts each day from Meals on Wheels to ensure students begin each day with the conditions they need to be successful learners.
The program follows the Alberta Nutrition Guidelines for Children and Youth, which is also guiding conversations at Marlborough Elementary around healthy food choices and the benefits of homemade options such as granola bars and muffins. Although Banana Flax and Apple Oatmeal Muffins are currently a hit, the school is hoping to work with Meals on Wheels create a Marlborough Mystery Muffin that includes a hidden vegetable.
The breakfast program at Marlborough Elementary will continue daily for the remainder of the school year. This pilot will also be extended to two additional CBE schools in January 2017.
