Student athletes at the National Sport School student council held a student plebiscite on the potential 2026 Olympic bid on Tuesday, Nov. 6.
The polling booths were open for the day staffed by the school’s leadership students. All students were invited to participate to simulate the voting experience. The mock plebiscite helped the students to understand the power of the “will of the people,” voter turnout and how actions of governments are driven by political processes. This experience related directly to the Social Studies curriculum, as well as a lifelong practice the education system hopes to create – citizens engaged in political processes to protect and promote Canada’s strong democratic values.
There was a 57.7 per cent voter turn out with 116 ballots counted. Students were 84.4 per cent in favour of an olympic bid.
All Calgarians are encouraged to exercise their democratic right to vote, get informed and cast their ballot.
