Students Benefit from Dual Credit Carpentry Partnerships

Oct. 11, 2016

The Calgary Board of Education is pleased to offer a second cohort of dual credit carpentry, in partnership with Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) and the Calgary Construction Association (CCA).

Thirteen students from seven CBE high schools will attend SAIT from Monday to Thursday, 8:30 am – 11:30 am, for the entire 2016-17 school year. They are completing the requirements for a SAIT Pre-employment Carpentry Certificate, completing 15 credits towards their high school diploma, and earning the right to challenge the exam for the first year of their technical training through Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT).

This off-campus, hands on learning environment will expose students to concepts in measuring, blueprint reading, tool safety, drawings, flooring and foundations. The CBE has positioned a certificated teacher that is a red seal carpenter to work with the SAIT instructor to support our students and build our professional capital.

The CBE values the opportunity to work with our post-secondary and business partners, and the role they play in supporting public education.
