Letter from Education Minister Regarding In-Person Learning

Dear parents and guardians:

Yesterday afternoon, the Calgary Board of Education received correspondence from the Minister of Education regarding access to in-person learning. The Minister has asked us to share this letter with you on her behalf.

Further to the letter, we want to assure you that in-person learning has and continues to be the CBE’s priority. This school year, we have not transitioned a single class to online learning.

Our school communities are able to provide this stability to families because of the extraordinary efforts of our teachers, principals and support staff.

At times, throughout the system, teachers are teaching more than one class at a time. Principals, assistant principals and central staff are moving into classrooms when required, while balancing their existing workloads. And, we are hiring additional substitute teachers to cover staff absences.

The recent letter from the Chief and Senior Medical Officers of Health in Alberta highlights measures we can all take to reduce the spread and lessen the impact of illness in school communities.

We will continue to keep our community informed about the health situation through our daily, school-by-school absence tracker. Figures from the previous school day are posted the following morning.

Thank you for taking the time to review the information.

Sincerely,

Christopher Usih
Chief Superintendent of Schools
