The arts are an essential element of learning. High-quality arts opportunities foster a creative life by engaging students in art-making and encountering art and artists. The arts disciplines of Art, Dance, Drama, Music and the Literary Arts offer students many unique opportunities. Engaging in artistic practices supports student success across subjects. Through the arts, students learn the skills to explore ideas, create, innovate, express themselves, solve complex problems and practice perseverance.
From kindergarten to Grade 12, the arts offer students opportunities to discover their passions, come to know who they are as people, and express their thinking and learning. Beyond acquiring important knowledge, skills and techniques in each arts discipline, creative learning opportunities challenge students to think in new ways and explore new ideas.
Everyday fine arts programs offer students opportunities to become actors, artists, dancers, musicians, and performers. Students thrive in environments where they can engage in these artistic practices.
In the Fine Arts, students are provided with opportunities to develop the competencies required of engaged thinkers and ethical citizens with an entrepreneurial spirit.
Stakeholder Engagement
Strong relationships with Calgary’s artistic community are important to the success of arts within the CBE. We are dedicated to working collaboratively with stakeholders in an effort to develop exceptional opportunities for students to learn in, through and about the arts.
Fine Arts Programming
Several options exist for students to study the arts. All students are able to receive rich arts learning opportunities in their community school. In addition, students from Grades 5 to 9 wishing to use the arts as a means of learning in all subjects can enroll in the Arts-Centred Learning program. High school students interested in an enhanced focus on arts learning can enroll in the Performing and Visual Art program. Students who have dedicated themselves to the study of the fine arts are able to receive the Fine & Performing Arts Certificate in recognition of this achievement.
