Busing & Transportation Using Transportation in Cold Weather

Using Transportation in Cold Weather

Students and parents are reminded that extra caution should be taken during the winter months and periods of extreme weather. Calgary’s weather can include cold temperatures, wind chill and snow that make getting to and from school challenging. Please take a moment and review this important information with your children.

CBE schools rarely close due to snow or cold temperatures. All CBE schools will remain open to provide a safe, warm and secure environment for students.

Assume that schools are open unless you hear otherwise from your school. Information regarding any school closures due to weather will also be posted on the CBE website, on social media and shared with local news media.

Transportation Delays

During the winter, roads may be congested and slippery resulting in possible traffic and bus delays. Unusually cold or stormy weather can also result in buses being delayed. Unexpected mechanical problems with the bus may occur more frequently at this time of year. Children should be dressed appropriately for the colder weather as buses cool off very quickly.

Be Prepared

CBE reminds families to:

  • Dress children warmly and ensure they are never left alone at a bus stop.
  • Give children clear instructions about what to do if the bus doesn’t show up.
  • Have a back-up plan for care before and after school in case of delays.
  • Use a backpack to help kids carry school items more easily in snow and ice.
