In November and December, we shared our plan for adjusted boundaries and designations for the communities of Auburn Bay, Seton and Mahogany due to three new schools opening in Auburn Bay and Mahogany in September 2022.
Auburn Bay, Seton and Mahogany families were provided with the opportunity to learn more about our plan and get their questions answered at two virtual sessions on Nov. 29 and Dec. 1, 2021. Families were also encouraged to share their thoughts and questions about the plan via online idea boards.
The feedback gathered through the virtual sessions, and online idea boards would suggest there is overall support for the plan that was shared on Nov. 23, 2021. As a result, we will be moving forward with the plan we shared.
More consultation was needed for students currently in Grade 8. Students do not typically move schools with only one year left in the school they are attending. These communities are an exception to standard practice because the new middle school in Auburn Bay will allow them to attend school closer to home. Between Dec. 2021 and Jan. 2022, we consulted with these students’ families to survey what school they would prefer to attend for the 2022-23 school year. Based on the feedback we received through this consultation process, we decided to have Grade 9 offered at the Auburn Bay middle school next year.
The following changes have been confirmed for 2022-23 and beyond:
Rationale for Plan
We believe this plan provides the best opportunity for the following CBE planning principles to be achieved:
- Students attend school closer to home.
- Program continuity from kindergarten to Grade 12.
- Equitable access for all students to quality learning environments and choice of programs.
- Space and resources are used effectively.
Planning principles are considered in making all CBE student accommodation decisions and can be found in AR1090.
Changes Proposed
Community of Auburn Bay
There will be new boundaries for Auburn Bay School and the new elementary school in Auburn Bay. The schools will offer kindergarten to Grade 4 programming for 2022-23 and then expand to include Grade 5 in 2023-24. Students currently attending Andrew Sibbald School will return to Auburn Bay schools.
The Auburn Bay middle school will offer Grades 5-8 in 2022-23 and then change to Grades 6-9 in 2023-24. Students currently attending Nickle School will now attend the Auburn Bay middle school. If Grade 8 students want to stay at Nickle School for their Grade 9 year, contact your principal before Feb. 16, 2022.
Community of Mahogany
Mahogany School will offer kindergarten to Grade 4 programming in 2022-23 and expand to include Grade 5 in 2023-24. Students attending Riverbend School will be re-designated to Mahogany School. In the future, Mahogany School is expected not to have enough space for all students in the community. When that happens, some Mahogany students will attend the newest elementary school in Auburn Bay.
Mahogany will be designated to the new Auburn Bay middle school. Students from Mahogany currently attending Sherwood will be re-designated to Auburn Bay. If Grade 8 students want to stay at Sherwood School for their Grade 9 year, contact your principal before Feb. 16, 2022. Students from Mahogany currently in Grades 5 and 6 at Riverbend School will automatically be enrolled in the new Auburn Bay middle school for the next school year.
Community of Seton
Kindergarten to Grade 5 students will be re-designated to Cranston School, and Grade 6-9 students will be designated to Dr. George Stanley School. Seton students currently attending Nickle School may remain at the school if they wish. However, transportation services from the Seton community to Nickle School will end on June 30, 2022. Students currently attending Auburn Bay School may remain at Auburn Bay School if they wish; however, transportation will not be provided. Transportation will be provided to Cranston School and Dr. George Stanley School in the future.

CBE finalized plans for each of the new schools in Jan. 2022 and created designation maps.

Schools to be Impacted by Declining Enrolment
This plan will see declining enrolment at schools that students in the communities of Auburn Bay, Mahogany and Seton currently attend. This includes Andrew Sibbald School, Nickle School, Riverbend School and Sherwood School. There will be work happening with these school communities into the future to determine how excess school space may be utilized.
