Building & Modernizing Schools

School Projects

With the tremendous increase in Calgary's population in the last five years and many families deciding to live in new suburban communities, our need for new schools has never been greater. We also need to modernize many of our existing schools, many of which are more than 40 years old, to meet the learning needs of 21st century learners.

The first step in building or modernizing a school is receiving funding for the work. Funding for CBE school construction and modernization projects is solely granted by the Alberta Government. Annually, we provide Alberta Education with a list of our building and modernization priorities, along with every other school district in the province. This list of priorities is part of our Three-Year School Capital Plan, which is approved by the Board of Trustees.

The Three-Year School Capital Plan contains information on your community, including whether your community is listed, its ranking, how the rankings are determined and the breakdown of each project’s ranking.

See Criteria for School Capital Planning Priorities for details on how we rank projects.

Modernizations

School major modernization projects provide for the renovation of the whole or part of a school building for both present and future educational programs. Modernization projects provide enhanced facilities and increased learning opportunities across the CBE. School major modernization projects should not exceed 75% of the replacement value of the school building as per provincial guidelines. See our Three-Year School Capital Plan for more information.

Modular Classrooms

Each year, CBE submits requests for modular classroomsto Alberta Education. Modulars are stand-alone or attached classrooms that can provide additional learning spaces for schools that are full or reaching maximum capacity. They also provide flexibility to accommodate students as they can be removed or relocated as needed. The province provides new modulars, as well as funding for the relocation or demolition of existing modulars.

Demolishing modulars that are at the end of their useful life cycle reduces expensive recurring operating expenses (i.e., heat, electricity and maintenance).

Below is the list of schools affected by the ongoing modular classroom program at CBE, organized by expected completion date.
