Getting Students to School
Every school day starts with a journey, and the CBE is here to help make it a safe, reliable and positive experience. This page brings together everything families need to know about getting to and from school with confidence.
Our transportation service is provided to align with Student Transportation | Administrative Regulation 6095, and students using transportation are expected to comply with Student Code of Conduct | Administrative Regulation 6005.
Transportation Services
- School bus service is available to most K-9 students in the Regular Program or Alternative Programs who live outside of their designated school's walk zone
- Calgary Transit provides service for some Grade 6-9 students and all Grade 10-12 students
- Specialized transportation is available for some students in specialized programs, unique settings, or with other requirements
Guiding Principles
Families are responsible for helping students travel to and from the bus stop and then waiting safely for the bus.
From the stop, CBE-arranged transportation helps students arrive safely at school on time and ready to learn.
Transportation Readiness Checklist
Throughout the year, families are encouraged to review the Transportation Readiness Checklist to be prepared for using transportation every school day.
Please review for tips and reminders on:
- Getting out the door
- Traveling to and from the bus stop
- Waiting safely at the bus stop
- Riding the bus

Transportation in New & Emerging Communities
The CBE is committed to supporting families in new and emerging communities with safe and reliable transportation options.
What to Expect
Yellow bus service is introduced once streets are safe, clear of obstructions (construction supplies and equipment) and roads are maintained by the City — allowing the yellow bus to enter and turn around safely within the community.
When yellow bus service is not available:
- Regular program bus stops may be located in nearby communities.
- Alternative program bus stops are grouped together at central locations, following a “congregated stop model.” As conditions improve, service options may be adjusted to better reflect the needs of the community.
Calgary Transit
Calgary Transit provides service to new or emerging communities when they meet specific infrastructure guidelines. Until then, students may use Calgary Transit from nearby communities — if available.
Otherwise, yellow school bus service may be added to a new or emerging community if:
- No yellow bus service exists in a nearby community, and
- It is deemed safe to operate in the new area.
CBE Transportation Services regularly monitors road conditions and construction progress. Bus stop locations may change during the school year to reflect improvements in safety and access.
