Education Week offers a moment to recognize the important work that happens across our system every day to support students and learning. Established in 1928, Education Week is a celebration of the power of learning and the people who make it possible.
Learning is our central purpose. It is one of the CBE values that we carry out each and every day. Together, the Calgary Board of Education serves one in six students in Alberta, each with their own strengths, needs and aspirations. The responsibility to provide a world-class learning experience for every student is significant, and it is carried with professionalism, care and expertise across all roles.
At the heart of this work are our teachers. Every day, they bring deep professional knowledge, thoughtful preparation and a commitment to continuous learning into their classrooms. Drawing on their training and experience, teachers make countless decisions in real time to respond to student needs, adapt instruction and create engaging, inclusive learning environments. Their expertise and professional judgment are essential to student success and to the strength of public education.
This work is strengthened by the contributions of support staff, school and system leaders, and service unit teams who help create the conditions for learning to happen. Together, these roles ensure that students are supported academically, socially and emotionally.
Our schools are communities. In classrooms, hallways and shared spaces, relationships are built that support well-being and connection. Through collaboration with colleagues and partnerships with families, teachers help foster environments where learning is meaningful, responsive and grounded in care.
Education Week is an opportunity to pause and recognize this collective effort. Much of this work—especially the daily planning, problem-solving and relationship-building led by teachers — is complex and not always visible, yet it has a direct and lasting impact on students every day.
Thank you to our teachers for your expertise, professionalism and dedication, and to all staff for the care and commitment you bring to your roles. Your work is essential to the strength of public education and to the experiences of the students and families we serve.
