Honouring Asian Heritage Month

May. 01, 2025

May is Asian Heritage Month in Canada, a time to recognize and celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of Asian peoples and communities, encompassing the many identities, traditions, and experiences that shape the Asian diaspora.

At the Calgary Board of Education, this month offers a time for reflection, learning, and growth. It provides an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the diverse experiences of Asian students, staff, and families, while celebrating the ways in which they contribute to the richness of our classrooms and communities.

Joy Kogawa, a renowned Canadian author of Japanese descent, reminds us: “As we reflect on the stories of the past, we uncover the pathways that guide us forward.” Her words highlight that true progress is rooted in understanding the histories that have shaped us. By recognizing and learning from our collective past, we lay the foundation for a more inclusive and just future.

Asian Heritage Month invites us to celebrate and uplift stories of joy, resilience, and brilliance, while reflecting on how Asian students, staff, and families are seen and supported in our schools and workplaces. This month, and every month, we honour the contributions that strengthen and enrich our learning communities.

In recognition of recent tragic events that took place in Vancouver, our thoughts are with the families and community who are in mourning.
