Engagement & Withdrawal Policy | CBe-learn

While online learning offers incredible flexibility throughout the school day, it still requires regular participation and engagement. Summer courses move at an accelerated pace and require consistent engagement. They are not designed to be completed all at once at the end of the term.

Students are expected to:

• Log in their courses regularly each week
• Complete learning tasks/assessments according to course timelines
• Communicate with their teacher in Brightspace/D2L
• Contact their teacher as soon as possible if they anticipate being offline or unable to participate for a few days.

Regular communication is key to enable teachers to best support students. If something is getting in the way of engagement, reaching out sooner rather than later allows teachers to better support student learning.

Monitoring Engagement

Teachers regularly review student engagement and progress throughout the summer term. This includes looking at:

• Login activity
• Assessment submission/completion
• Overall course progress

If there are concerns around student engagement, and there has been no communication from the student, the teacher may reach out to the student and/or parents/guardians.

Withdrawal

Due to the accelerated pace of summer school courses, by the mid-point in July there is limited time to complete the course requirements. Students who have not meaningfully engaged in the course may no longer be in a position to successfully demonstrate learning of course outcomes in the remaining time. At this point, student engagement will be reviewed and students may be considered for withdrawal if they:

• Have never logged in
• Have logged in but have not submitted any coursework
• Have engaged minimally and there has been no communication regarding their lack of engagement.

Withdrawal does not occur automatically without review. Engagement data and student and parent/guardian communications are considered before a decision is finalized. Students who are experiencing challenges with coursework or have planned absences are encouraged to communicate early with teachers so that support can be provided.
