Culture is a concept that encompasses the social behavior and norms found in human societies, as well as the knowledge, beliefs, arts, laws, customs, capabilities, and habits of the individuals in these groups. As per this definition, everyone has a culture and this debunks the idea that culturally responsive teaching is for students of color. What this means is that effective teaching is culturally responsive based on the student body. Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) is defined as using the cultural knowledge, prior experiences, frames of reference, and performance styles of ethnically diverse students to make learning encounters more relevant to and effective for them.

Welcome, FSL and L&C teachers! Join me for a hands-on session where we'll dive into transforming everyday topics and vocabulary into FUNctional language activities in the Additional Languages classroom. For instance, my French and Spanish 20 classes revamped a clothing unit through a mini Thrift Boutique. Students brought in gently used items, turning 'One man's trash is another man's treasure' into a reality by shopping in the target language with fake euros, leaving with newfound treasures.
Get ready to play the roles of shoppers and sellers in our very own TL Thrift Store during this session! While it's all pretend, you'll still leave with some treats to take home. I will also take a brief moment guide you through the planning, execution, and assessment of this activity.
After the demo, we will gather in small groups for a creative brainstorming session. Our goal: generate doable and FUNctional language tasks that bring our vocab lists to life in the classroom. I am so excited to collaborate and draw inspiration from each other's expertise, all with a TBLT approach

Description
The territory of Rouleauville, covering an area of two quarter-sections, was acquired in 1883 by the missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate and Father Albert Lacombe and Hippolyte Leduc after lobbying the federal government.
The Rouleauville neighbourhood evokes the French roots of Calgary. Francophone merchants and missionaries arrived in the area around 1850, and the first permanent mission was established in 1872. Father Doucet, who ran the mission, accompanied Ephrem Brisebois, the commander of the North West Mounted Police, up to the junction of the Bow and Elbow Rivers in 1875. There, they built Fort Brisebois, which would be renamed Calgary a year later. The first parish of this nascent community, Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix, had a majority of Francophone Métis and French Canadians. Among them, the brothers Charles and Édouard Rouleau played a leading role. The heritage of Rouleauville honours the memory of these Francophones. (source : https://corridorcanada.ca/resource/rouleauville-aux-origines-francophones-de-calgary/)
Come and discover this little gem right in the heart of Calgary. The walking tour consists of a wonderful 3km path allowing visitors to explore 14 different sites along the way. A unique occasion to explore the French history of early Calgary settlers with your students.

You cannot know something without knowing what it is not. Variation Theory is a pedagogical approach, mainly used for mathematics teaching, that can facilitate the delivery of effective instruction in an additional language by highlighting sameness and differences within concepts taught. Join me in this mini workshop as we explore what teaching through variation theory could look like in your classroom and engage in planning a lesson you can implement right away. This presentation will be in English with examples of how I use this theory in my math in Spanish classes. I will also share resources you can use to continue developing your skills in implementing this approach.

Hands on activity and presentation about the advantages of making our own hand made sketchbook using recycles materials. By the end of this session, every participant would leave with their own hand made sketchbook and ideas of how to implement them in their classrooms.
Here are some reasons why you might choose to incorporate this activity into your classroom:
- Ownership and Engagement: When students are involved in the creation of their sketchbooks, they feel a sense of ownership. This can lead to increased engagement and interest in using the sketchbooks for various projects.
- Hands-on Learning: Making sketchbooks is a hands-on activity that allows students to learn practical skills, such as bookbinding techniques, measuring, cutting, and assembling. This tactile experience enhances their understanding of art materials, processes and helps to build vocabulary.
- Sense of Accomplishment: Completing the process of making a sketchbook gives students a sense of accomplishment. This positive feeling can carry over into their projects, contributing to a more positive and motivated learning environment.
- Collaboration:The process of making sketchbooks can be a collaborative effort, promoting teamwork and peer learning. Students can share ideas, techniques, and materials, fostering a sense of community within the classroom.
Overall, the act of making homemade sketchbooks in a classroom setting integrates artistic expression with practical skills, encouraging a holistic and engaged approach.

How to Make Any Lesson Culturally Responsive - Practical Examples for the Classroom
Session

Description
Room: 103
Some key principles of CRT include recognizing and valuing diversity, creating a supportive learning community, and adapting instructional strategies to meet the needs of learners. Student engagement, achievement, and overall well-being are some positive impacts of CRT on students. So, how can teachers make their lessons culturally responsive? The “smart” teacher takes the responsibility of tapping from the culture of students to provide meaningful curriculum and pedagogy. In this session, you will learn practical ways of making any lesson culturally responsive, including strategies that you can employ the next day to reach every student in you culturally diverse classrooms.

Learn how to create AHA! moments for your students with carefully sequenced lessons. In this session we will investigate how to use variation in examples to prompt students to make critical conceptual connections. For example, the sequence 2+2 then 2+3 incites students to connect to their background knowledge of doubles and then assimilate the new understanding that 2+3 is like 2+2 and one more. Small changes in lesson design can help to alleviate cognitive overload while building important conceptual connections in long-term memory. Varying examples works across disciplines and particularly well in phonics instruction.

Would you love to…
…slow down?
…catch your breath?
…experience the joy of learning alongside your students?
The demands of curriculum, assessment, and data seem to be constantly increasing. There can be an intense invisible pressure to constantly be more efficient, more precise. It feels like the wheel keeps turning and you’re constantly churning out lessons. Yet, what you and your students may desperately need is to slow down, and come together! Not just once, but as a practice.
An increasing number of schools are striving to slow the instructional pace and contextualize language learning for students by exploring areas around their school site, an approach called place-based education.
In this session you will learn:
-What place-based education is (and isn’t)
-Ways teachers and administrators can promote more exploration
-How to integrate language learning into place-based explorations

Mathematical word problems have been portrayed as being one of the most difficult and complex types of problems that students encounter during their mathematics education (Daroczy et al., 2015). The students need to understand the language, the numerical complexity and then the interaction between both these aspects.
“It turns out that people who do well in math are those that make connections and see math as a connected subject.” Jo Boaler, 2014. Deep learning in Mathematics is possible when the concepts are presented in small incremental difficulty and connections from previous levels are built and strengthened.
Our instructional design sets out connect concepts from the new Elementary Curriculum with those in Junior High to clarify progressions for our students. We have used word problems for this work as all of us are first and foremost teachers of literacy. Teachers will leave this session with a tool kit for resources which they will be able to use in their classroom to scaffold understanding of word problems. We would like to invite both Elementary (Division II) and Junior High (Division III) teachers. The materials will be available both in English and in French.
We are grateful to the OLEP grant, to make this work possible.

The traditional lack of success of most Canadian students in the regular French program in attaining the ability to communicate spontaneously led to the conceptualization of a modified program. This program, called Intensive French, introduced and evaluated as an experiment in several school districts, formed the basis for the creation of a more effective approach for the development of skills in a second/foreign language and literacy: the Neurolinguistic Approach (NLA). The NLA expresses the major change in the understanding of how communication skills are developed: learning to communicate spontaneously in a second language depends on the reuse of structures in a variety of cognitive situations to express authentic messages rather than on knowledge of the way a language functions. Put differently, it prioritises the acquisition of implicit competence over the learning of grammatical knowledge. This is achieved by the adoption of a literacy-based approach and an increase in intensity of instruction. Besides having strong support empirically from numerous experiments, the NLA has sound theoretical foundation, as it conforms to research in neurolinguistics. The five pedagogical principles that define the approach will be explained, as well as the differences between the NLA and the paradigm on which most current resources and teaching strategies are based. It is now 25 years since the original research occurred. The use of the NLA, as it will be shown, has expanded widely. With some adaptations, it is used for other languages and in other milieus. In Canada, classes are offered in mandarin, Ukrainian, Spanish and Arabic, amongst others. It has also been used in several indigenous communities, such as to restore the use of Mohawk, Cri and Dene. Its use has expanded throughout the world, as in China, Japan, France, Germany, Belgium, Poland, Russia, as well as Mexico. The Intensive French program originally focussed on students in grades 5 or 6 (ages 10 -12); nowadays, the programs based on the approach include adults, particularly immigrants entering new countries. With the increasing interest in inclusion and cultural diversity, there is a demand for language learning amongst pre-school and primary children that can be successfully addressed by the NLA. Other current experiments target trilingual schools (a video will be shown) and First Nation communities.
