Protection of Privacy and Access to Information
Protection of Privacy Act and Access to Information Act
The
Protection of Privacy Act (POPA) and the
Access to Information Act (ATIA) are pieces of provincial legislation that are intended to strike a balance between the public's right to know and the individual's right to privacy, as these rights relate to information held by The Calgary Board of Education (CBE). ATIA ensures individuals have the right to access their own personal information and provides access to other records held by the school board. POPA outlines standards that the school board must follow for the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information.
Publicly Available Information
Section 91(1) of ATIA requires that manuals, handbooks or other guidelines used in decision-making processes that affect the public be made available to the public. This information is available on this website and in our
Personal Information Banks.
Section 57 of the Act requires the publication of a directory of personal information banks; collections of personal information that is organized by identifying names, numbers, symbols or other particulars assigned to an individual. This directory is available in the links below.
