Minecraft Design Challenge: Level Up, Calgary! A Great Success for CBE Students, City of Calgary and Microsoft

Oct. 31, 2022

CBE students re-envision downtown Calgary, enhance digital citizenship, and embrace game-based learning through Minecraft: Education Edition.

Last school year, the CBE in partnership with Microsoft and The City of Calgary, challenged students from Grades 1-12 to consider, “How might we reimagine our public spaces to enrich the lives of Calgarians and strengthen our community?” Using Minecraft: Education Edition, an open-world and immersive environment, over 10,000 students responded by creating design solutions in a customized virtual representation of downtown Calgary. Student submissions were reviewed by a panel of City of Calgary experts who selected four winners spanning all divisions, one of which translated a Grade 4 submission into a physical build.

The “Level Up, Calgary!” challenge revealed the true power of digital citizenship to inspire students to move beyond screens and help solve complex problems in their communities. - Microsoft Case Study

The success of Season 1 has been captured by Microsoft in a video and written case study, that acknowledges the accomplishment made possible through this educational and community partnership, and of course, the creativity and high-level of student engagement. You can read more about these case studies on the Minecraft blog.

In addition to the success of enriching learning and inspiring creativity, problem solving and critical thinking in students, the CBE, alongside its partners, is proud to be the recipient of the Minister's Awards for Municipal Excellence in the Partnership category for Minecraft Level Up, Calgary!

The CBE is excited to announce Level Up Calgary Season 2: Achievement Unlocked will commence in February 2023! Season 2 will see an expanded Calgary world, with more opportunities for students to learn, explore and create sustainable designs. In the spirit of collaboration, students from Calgary Catholic School Division and Rocky View School Division will participate alongside CBE students in the upcoming challenge.
