Annual Education Results Report (AERR)
Each year, an Annual Education Results Report (AERR) is prepared for Alberta Education, providing a comprehensive account of performance for the previous school year. The AERR outlines progress on priorities and outcomes as it relates to the CBE’s Education Plan.
Detailed results of the 2022-23 school year are available in the Annual Education Results Report.
Transition from Paper-Based to Digital Assessments
Alberta Education is transitioning to a new digital platform to enhance provincial student assessments. This new platform means most students will eventually write diploma exams and provincial achievement tests with a computer rather than pencil and paper. Digital assessments will be more interactive and engaging for students and offer a range of built-in learning supports and accomodations for a more inclusive test-taking experience. It will also streamline the process schools use to administer provincial assessments.
Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs)
Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs) are administered annually to all Alberta students in grades 6 and 9. These standardized tests reflect the essentials that all Alberta students are expected to achieve, regardless of school choice or location.
PATs help:
- determine if students are learning what they are expected to learn
- report to Albertans how well students have achieved provincial standards at given points in their schooling
- assist schools, authorities and the province in monitoring and improving student learning
The tests occur in January, May and June for English and Français/French language arts, math, science and social studies.
Some Grade 9 students write PATs in January of each year.
Grade 9 achievement tests based on the Knowledge and Employability programs of study in English language arts, math, science and social studies are also administered.
Student Learning Assessments (SLA)
SLAs are under review and will not be offered for the 2023-24 school year.
