Health & Wellness in School

Masks

For the start of 2021-22 school year, the CBE will require staff and students (kindergarten to Grade 12) to wear a mask indoors in all schools and workplaces. Masks are also required on yellow school buses, as well as taxis and public transit.

CBE made this decision based on a number of factors including careful consideration of the number of students who are ineligible for vaccination, vaccination rates amongst eligible students and staff, as well as local case levels and data from Alberta Health Services regarding provincial and local cases. This decision is consistent with the Education Act and with occupational health and safety regulations, which both require the CBE to provide a safe learning environment to students and staff.

This decision will be reviewed before the end of September and will consider any further direction from the Chief Medical Officer of Health, Alberta Education as well as existing active case counts in the Calgary Zone.

Mask Guidelines

CBE’s mask guidelines for the 2021-22 school year are similar to the approach taken last year, including clear guidelines for mask usage, provide for mask breaks, and mask-free periods.

The protocol includes an exemption process. Students and staff will continue to be eligible for an exemption where the individual is physically, psychologically, or developmentally unable to wear a mask and for those individuals who cannot wear one for reasons protected under the Alberta Human Rights Act.
