Samuel W. Shaw School Hosts 500 Junior High Students for Leadership Conference

Calgary—Samuel W. Shaw School will welcomes more than 500 junior high students and teachers from across Alberta on Nov. 25 - 26 for the Alberta Junior High Leadership Conference 2016 (JHLC2016). Students will discuss the role and impact of young people’s leadership in creating a more just, inclusive community.

This is the first time a Calgary school has been selected to host this conference. Youth attending are active in leading Gay-Straight Alliances, Student Councils and running other local and global leadership initiatives.
 
The Junior High Student Leadership Conference comprises of two days of youth-led dialogue on issues that are pertinent to student leadership (student activities, school climate, student government structure, etc.), and addresses the professional development of advisors and leadership training for student delegates.

The conference will feature two keynote speakers: Andrew Hall, cofounder of Mealshare, and motivational comedian David Edward Garcia, who will both share their perspectives on youth-led collective impact work at the school-level and reinforce youth commitment to activism and social change.

Media are invited to attend the opening ceremonies on Nov. 25 at 2 p.m. Students will be available for interview at 1:45 p.m.
