Celebrating the Year of the Rabbit with the CBE

CALGARY – Three Calgary Board of Education schools are celebrating the Lunar New Year with special performances and events. Chinese New Year takes place on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2023.

Media are invited to the celebrations. Students and teachers will be available for interviews and photos.

Midnapore (K-4) and Harold Panabaker (5-9) Schools

Students in the Mandarin Bilingual Program at these schools are preparing to celebrate Chinese New Year, the Year of the Rabbit. The performance will include Chinese songs, dances, and culture-rich performances enthusiastically presented by the students from the two schools. Students have created and curated beautiful costumes and sets to enhance their performance and cultural understanding.

Highwood School (K-4)

The theme of this year’s celebration is “Uniting in Celebration.” Their concert explores some of the most significant celebrations found in both Canadian and Chinese cultures, notably from an Albertan lens. This will include such celebrations as the Calgary Stampede, Indigenous Powwow, the Mid-Autumn Festival, the Lantern Festival and Lunar New Year.
