The Forest Lawn High School Dance Team competed at Dance Evolutions Dance Competition at the Edge School for Athletes over the weekend of April 6-8, where they competed against dance studios from all over Calgary, Cochrane, Airdrie and Didsbury.
The team submitted three pieces; a contemporary piece choreographed by FLHS Elise Janz entitled “Things We do”, a Jazz piece choreographed by FLHS Teacher Kelsey McMahon entitled “Swing Kids” and a hip hop piece choreographed by Katherine Burrowes and Edgar Reyes called “Party”. The Contemporary piece earned the team the “Most Outstanding Performance” Award and a Gold medal, and the Jazz and Hip Hop pieces each earned the “Most Outstanding Performance” Awards, the “Most Outstanding Choreography” Awards and two High Gold Medals. Their scores from their first performances earned them two places in the finals to compete against the top five groups with their Jazz and Hip Hop Dances.
The finals took place on Sunday night and with an amazing performance by the team, they were able to win both first and second place overall. “Swing Kids” won first place overall and a $200 cash prize and “Party” won second place overall and a $150 cash prize. In addition to all of this, Kelsey McMahon was awarded the “Overall Most Outstanding Choreography Award” for her work on “Swing Kids”.
Ms. Janz and Ms. McMahon are extremely proud of their student’s performance and sportsmanship both on and off the stage, and couldn’t be happier with the outcome of their first competition.
The dance team headed to Lake Louise to compete at the Shy Ann Dance Festival from Apr. 27-29, 2018 and then will finish their season performing at the East Side Dance Festival from May 16-17, 2018.
