CALGARY, AB – June 21 marks National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada, a day to honour the rich cultural heritage of Indigenous people. It is also the 20th anniversary of the opening of
Piitoayis Family School, which provides K-6 programming with an Indigenous focus.
To celebrate the occasion, Piitoayis Family School is hosting an event-filled day for current students and their families. Events include a pancake breakfast, tipi teachings, a historical photo display, and a time capsule burial.
News media are welcome to attend anytime throughout the morning, and students and staff will be available for interviews between 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

- 8 a.m. Tipi Raising (still pictures only – no video, please)
- 9 a.m. Pancake Breakfast
- 9 a.m. Students and staff are available for interviews until 12:30 p.m.
- 10 a.m. Tipi Teachings
- 11:45 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Lunch, historic photos display and student tours, time capsule burial
The afternoon includes: an assembly for students and families (including school alum speeches, Honour Song and Elder teachings) and a friendship dance to close the day.
