Cancellation of High School Graduation-events

Apr. 16, 2020

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians,

The CBE has made the difficult decision to cancel graduation ceremonies, banquets and school-based celebrations for the 2019-20 school year. This decision was not taken lightly and was based on The City of Calgary's decision to cancel all public gatherings up until June 30. We know graduation is an important and meaningful milestone for students, families and friends. It is an irreplaceable event that marks many years of hard work, sacrifice and support. We feel your sadness in having to cancel graduations and empathize with students not being able to walk across the stage to celebrate their academic achievement. Schools are considering different opportunities for our graduands to receive yearbooks and certificates and potential video tributes in June.

Schools will communicate their specific plans related to picking up graduation material and other personal belongings in the coming weeks. Each high school will share information regarding graduation fee refunds as it becomes available. Given the uncertainty of the COVID-19 situation, we are unable to communicate plans for the fall at this time.

We want to thank all of our students and their families for your understanding and cooperation. We will all get through this together.

Take care,

Christopher Usih
Chief Superintendent of Schools
