​Welcome to the CBE

Please review and complete the documents listed below. The information contained within these documents will help us build a confidential employee file for your CBE employment record and ensure a smooth transition as an employee of the CBE.

Before Y​our Start Date

You will need to complete the following documents:

Note | participation in the Blue Cross Substitute Teacher's Benefits Package is a condition of employment. Benefits information is available in the Blue Cross CBE Benefits Booklet and Group Benefits Frequently Asked Questions.​

In addition to these completed forms, you will need to provide us with a copy of your:​

  • social insurance card
  • birth certificate
  • teaching certificate (if your Alberta Certification has expired, email certifications@cbe​.ab.ca. We will prepare the documentation necessary to request a re-issuance of your certification from Alberta Education)

Once you have reviewed the above administrative regulations, please include a signed copy of the Acknowledgment of Responsibilities and Obligations for New Employees (as listed above) in your hiring package back to us.

Salary Placement Information

Alberta Teacher's Association (ATA) | you will also need to complete a Teacher Qualifications Service (TQS) Application Form. TQS is the agency in Alberta responsible for evaluating teachers’ years of education for salary purposes. A TQS statement and proof of previous teaching experience is required according to Article 3 of the ATA collective agreement within 60 days of the date of employment to ensure any applicable salary adjustment is processed retroactively to date of employment. A user guid​e is included with the application to help you through the process. Your completed application form needs to be mailed to the address located on the back of the form. Do not include this in your CBE package.

If you have previous teaching experience with another school board, you are responsible to both obtain confirmation of your Previous Teaching Experience and to share this information with CBE for the purpose​ of salary grid placement. According to Article 3 of the ATA collective agreement, this must be provided within 40 days of the date of employment to ensure any applicable salary adjustment is processed retroactively to date of employment.​

Other Information You Need to Complete

Alberta Teacher's Retirement Fund (ATRF) | substitute teachers are not eligible to participate in the teachers’ pension plan. For more details, visit the Substitute Teachers page of the ATRF website.

Registering as a substitute | Teachers, Substitutes and School Administrators have web-based access to SmartFindExpress (SFE), the CBE's tool for booking substitutes. You must register and create a PIN to be able to use the SFE tool. For more information, go to CBE's Intranet site (Insite) and access the SmartFind Express Help page.

Security clearance | Everyone coming to work with the Calgary Board of Education must provide a cleared Police Information Check (PIC), dated within six months of their start date, before they can begin to work. If you do not have a current one on file with the CBE or if you have had a break in employment with the CBE you will require a Police Security Clearance. Please visit Calgary Police Services - Police Information Check to request a clearance.

If you are coming from out of province, please obtain a new Police Security Clearance from the Province where you have been residing. Original copies only must be submitted and it must be within 6 months of hire date.

Employee ID | Your employee ID number is required before you can acquire CBE network access. If you have not received your Employee ID number by your start date please contact the Employee Contact Centre at 403-817-7333 or​ ecc@cbe.ab.ca.

On Your St​​art Date

Network access | To access our technology, you will require a CBE account username and password. Follow the steps in the CBE Initial Account Set-up Guide on your first day of work.

After Your Start D​​ate

Safety | You will need to familiarize yourself with CBE’s Occupational Health and Safety policies. Once you have an employee ID and network access you will need to access the CBE's health and safety guidelines. You will be given access to PublicSchoolWORKS to complete your training.

Within 15 working days of your start date, you will need to have completed your safety training and your health and safety orientati​on with a supervisor at one of your work sites.

PeopleSoft | Log into PeopleSoft using your network log in and add in your teaching assignments. For more information, go to All ATA Employees Including Substitute Teachers - Teaching Assignments in PeopleSoft Information Guide.
