May. 21, 2026

The Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) selected nine incredible students from across the province for the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Award, which celebrates students who demonstrate remarkable personal and academic development through determination and initiative.

Among this year's recipients is Abigail DeSchutter, Grade 9 student at MidSun School.

Over the past three years, Abigail has transformed into a confident and capable leader within her school community. This award recognizes not only her strong academic performance in challenging courses but also for the quiet, meaningful ways she supports those around her.

“Abigail's growth has been extraordinary," says Christopher Hanson, Grade 9 teacher at MidSun School. “She leads with integrity, shows genuine care for others and consistently strives to make her school a better place."

At MidSun School, Abigail has taken on the voluntary role of a technology steward, helping peers and staff navigate digital tools and ensuring classrooms run smoothly. Beyond her formal contributions, she is known for her empathy and kindness, organizing peer support and offering encouragement to classmates who need it most.

Principal Charlene Kushniruk notes that it is Abigail's character that truly sets her apart.

Abigail's recognition reflects not only academic improvement, but a great sense of responsibility to her community, one she fulfills through service, empathy and ethical leadership.

Her nomination stands as a testament to her dedication and the impact one student can have on an entire school community.
