CBE Board of Trustees Response to 2018-19 Provincial Budget Announcement

Mar. 21, 2018

PDF of Media Statement

We have received the Provincial budget and would like to express our appreciation to the government for its continued support of public education and the Calgary Board of Education’s 122,000 students.

With the preliminary information we have, we can say that we are encouraged that the government continues to put a priority on educating the next generation of Albertans.

We are grateful to be funded for growth and to know that the approximately 2,000 new students we will welcome next year will be funded. However, we will continue to be challenged with inflationary pressures, the cost of operating our new schools, our modest reserve levels, and balancing parent expectations within available resources.

Over the next few weeks, and after we receive actual funding rates, we will be developing our detailed budget and will have a better idea of the pressures we still face. Our Budget Assumptions Report will be presented to the Board of Trustees at a public meeting on April 10.

We will continue to make decisions based on our values and the needs of the community: students come first, learning is our central purpose, and public education serves the common good.
