CALGARY — Kindergarten to Grade 4 Mandarin Bilingual Program students at Highwood School are preparing to welcome in the Year of the Rat with a special Chinese New Year performance at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium.

The theme of this year’s celebration is the Great Zodiac Race, which is the story of how the twelve Chinese Zodiac characters came to be and why the characters are in their specific order.

Media are invited to the celebration, which will include Chinese songs, culture-rich performances, a shadow puppet show, and a traditional lion dance. This year the lion dance will be performed solely by Grade 2 - 4 students and will include a large lion and four baby lions, as well as a student drummer.

This year’s production was done in collaboration with the talented artists from Trickster Theatre group, who did a four-week residency with the students of Highwood School.
