The Calgary Board of Education Board of Trustees is seeking volunteers for its Audit and
Risk Committee.
The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) is the largest school board in Western Canada,
serving more than 142,000 students. It has an operating budget of nearly 1.6 billion
dollars. The Audit and Risk Committee reports to the Board of Trustees and is comprised
of two elected trustees and a minimum of five volunteer individuals external to the Calgary
Board of Education.
The purpose of the committee is to assist the Board of Trustees in fulfilling its fiscal and
risk management oversight responsibilities by ensuring the assets of CBE are
safeguarded and resources are utilized effectively. Specific duties of the committee
include recommending the external auditor, reviewing and recommending the annual audit plan,
assessing the effectiveness of the external auditor, reviewing and recommending the year-end
financial statements and audit findings, reviewing internal audit reports, reviewing quarterly
budget variance reports, and reviewing the risk management framework and related reports.
Volunteers serve on the Committee for three years and attend approximately four
meetings per year in January, March, June and November. The role also involves
reviewing financial, audit and risk management documents in advance of meetings. The
ideal candidate will have a background in public accounting, business or law, having
competencies in the areas of:
Financial Management/Accounting Audit
Financial Planning
Internal Audit
Risk Management
Corporate Leadership
Public Sector/Not for Public Experience
Government Affairs/Public Policy
