Afternoon Jan. 4, 2026
A major water main break occurred on Dec. 30, 2025, on
16th Avenue NW (Highway 1) near Sarcee Trail.
Several sections of the road are currently closed for repairs, and significant impacts on school bus routes and some Calgary Transit bus routes are anticipated until the area fully re-opens. Currently, no CBE schools are under a boil water advisory.
The CBE knows that unexpected travel disruptions can be stressful for families preparing for the return to classes, so here is some information and resources to help you plan your journeys.
Impacts on Student Transportation
Detours and Congestion: Buses that normally use 16th Avenue N.W. may need to detour, and significant traffic congestion is expected on alternate routes.
City-Wide Delays: Delays are possible on all bus routes, even if a specific route does not go near the water main break. Because many buses serve multiple routes, a delay on an early run often results in a late arrival for a later run.
Be Prepared
In light of these disruptions and the potential for extended wait times, please review the following preparedness tips from the
CBE Weather Advisory page with your children:
Back-up Plan: Have a back-up childcare or transportation plan in place in case of significant delays.
Do Not Leave Children Alone: Never leave your child alone at a bus stop; ensure they are supervised until the bus arrives.
Dress for Conditions: There may be longer waits at bus stops. Ensure children are dressed for the current weather conditions.
Instructions: Give your child clear instructions about what to do if the bus does not show up.
Where to Find Updates
The City of Calgary has also issued an advisory regarding water usage across Calgary, and CBE schools are encouraged to do their part to reduce water usage.
Your continued patience and understanding are greatly appreciated during this time.
This page will be updated as the situation evolves.
