Grade 6 Students In The CBE Will Not Write Provincial Achievement Tests This Year

Feb. 04, 2015

Alberta Education has made writing Grade 6 Provincial Achievement Tests optional for this school year and the Calgary Board of Education has decided that its Grade 6 students will not be part of the tests in May and June, 2015.

This decision is consistent with the Calgary Board of Education’s decision to not write Grade 3 Provincial Achievement Tests last year.

This decision allows students and teachers to spend more time building learning within the Math, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies programs of study with less emphasis on test preparation. It also allows Grade 6 students greater opportunity to demonstrate their learning over time and in multiple ways. It de-emphasizes their performance on a single test.

Parents will continue to receive detailed information about their children’s learning and levels of achievement from report cards and ongoing communication from their teachers.  Amalgamated data from student reports cards will also provide schools and the community with information about student achievement on a larger scale.

Alberta Education has as yet made no announcement on the pilot of Grade 6 Student Learning Assessments.  Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
