PDF of Media ReleaseCALGARY –Griffith Woods School is expected to open for students in the communities of Springbank Hill and Discovery Ridge in September 2017.
The school is named for Griffith Woods Park, a natural environment park in southwest Calgary with a mature white spruce forest and wetlands. The park, located beside the Elbow River, was established in 2000 after Wilbur and Betty Griffith donated land from their estate to the City of Calgary. As a Special Protection Natural Environment Park, Griffith Woods Park is a popular destination for nature enthusiasts.
Wilbur Griffith was an oil lease broker, farmer, rancher and land developer. He also constructed the Pinebrook Golf and Country Club. The Griffiths resided in the community of Springbank.
The school naming committee recommended this name to the Board of Trustees after gathering and evaluating stakeholder input on possible names. The committee was comprised of CBE Trustees, parent and/or community representatives and members of CBE administration.
Griffith Woods School will serve students in kindergarten to Grade 9 with a capacity of 900 students.
