At the Dec. 16 public board meeting, CBE Trustees approved the Annual Education Results Report 2024-25. Findings from the report showed CBE is continuing to make meaningful progress toward its system-wide goals, with new data showing notable gains in literacy, high-school mathematics, well-being and inclusive learning practices. Strong performance on diploma exams and high school completion rates show that students are prepared for the next stage of their learning.
While the results point to areas requiring continued focus, CBE serves a diverse and culturally rich population across Calgary and remains committed to meeting the needs of all learners, including students who Self Identify as Indigenous and those who are acquiring English as an Additional Language. “These results highlight meaningful progress across our system while also showing us where to focus next to ensure ongoing improvement and growth,” said Laura Hack, Chair, CBE Board of Trustees. “We are proud of the continued dedication and hard work of CBE students and employees.”
Strong Academic Results, With Targeted Supports Driving Improvement
Students across CBE demonstrated strong achievement in literacy and mathematics this year. A few areas of note included:
- CBE outperformed the province on diploma exams, and graduation rates remain high.
- Early literacy focus from Kindergarten to Grade 3 is paying off, with positive trends in student achievement.
- Indigenous students are showing steady improvement in well-being and academic achievement, with rising high school completion rates and stronger results on key assessments.
At the same time, we acknowledge areas where additional focus is needed. Report card indicators in the middle-school grades and performance on Grade 9 Provincial Achievement Tests declined, underscoring the need to reinforce foundational skills like literacy and mathematics. Ongoing, responsive strategies and enhanced supports - designed to address the diverse learning needs of students, including those who benefit from additional language and culturally responsive programming - remain central to sustaining progress and advancing equitable outcomes for all students.
Positive Trends in Student Well-Being and Belonging
Student survey results point to encouraging improvements in emotional health, resiliency and cultural awareness. This was supported by professional learning for employees and inclusive programming across the system. Attendance has improved overall, especially in the early grades, though absenteeism rates are higher at the upper grades. This can affect well-being and achievement outcomes.
Focused efforts in middle schools, guided by actions identified in the Education Plan, led to significant improvements across all four domains of the current
CBE Well-Being Framework.
Truth & Reconciliation, Diversity and Inclusion
Teachers are reporting greater confidence in creating inclusive learning environments, supported by system-wide professional learning.
Despite this progress, ongoing efforts will focus on strengthening leadership confidence, improving access to resources and addressing areas where safety can be further improved among some student groups. The CBE will continue to elevate student voice and improve access to supports across the system.
Preparing Students for Future Success
CBE students continue to benefit from robust programming that prepares them for life beyond high school. Strong diploma exam results and high school completion rates demonstrate readiness for the next steps in learning. Expanded dual credit opportunities, off-campus experiences and apprenticeship pathways are giving students more ways to explore interests, develop practical skills and transition into post-secondary studies or the workforce.
“These achievements reflect the collective effort of students, families, teachers and staff across CBE,” said Joanne Pitman, Chief Superintendent. “Together, we are strengthening learning environments where every student feels supported to succeed and we remain committed to continuous improvement and addressing areas for growth with the same shared purpose and determination.”
As the CBE moves forward, it remains focused on ensuring that all students - across every grade, background and learning need - have equitable access to high-quality programming and the supports required to thrive.
