Celebrating Asian Heritage Month through Visual Journey
A vibrant mural celebrating Asian Heritage Month is now proudly on display at the Calgary Board of Education’s headquarters in Calgary’s Beltline. Bursting with colour and cultural significance, the piece continues to inspire, educate and uplift - one colorful detail at a time.
Originally created by then Grade 9 student Meiqi, the mural first lit up the hallways of MidSun School last year. What began as a school project, lighting up the hallways of the southeast junior high school quickly became something much more - a mural that’s as bold and beautiful as the cultures it celebrates.
A kaleidoscope of color and meaning, Meiqi’s mural pays tribute to the diverse traditions, histories, and contributions of Asian communities. With every brushstroke, she brought the continent’s stories to life - from traditional motifs to modern icons, from ancient landmarks to contemporary heroes.
“Each part of the mural tells a different story,” Meiqi explained. “I wanted people to feel like they were taking a journey through Asia — seeing how each culture is unique but also deeply connected.”
The mural quickly became a source of pride for students and staff alike, turning a blank wall into a powerful symbol of unity, identity and celebration.
As the month of May comes to an end, this work is a visual reminder that Asian heritage is not just something to observe once a year.
