Spring Update For CBE Families | April 12, 2022 2:00 PM

Apr. 12, 2022

Spring Update for CBE Families

Despite the cooler temperatures this week, spring is definitely in the air and schools are buzzing with activities and learning. As we head into the last few months of school, please take a moment to review the following updates and reminders.

Reminders

Healthy Schools

We must all work together to maintain healthy school environments for students and staff. This includes completing the Daily Health Checklist and keeping your child(ren) at home if they are sick. Schools will also support all students and staff who choose to wear a mask.

We continue to monitor absences due to illness in classrooms and schools, and have seen an increase in absences in the past couple of weeks. It may still be necessary to transition individual classes or grades to at-home learning as required due to operational challenges. If your child's class is impacted, you will be notified by your school.

Diploma Exams and Provincial Achievement Tests

Grade 12 diploma exams are expected to be administered this spring. Due to learning disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Alberta Education has said the weighting of diploma exams will be temporarily reduced to 10 per cent for this school year only. More information on diploma exams is available on the Alberta Education website.

To help students feel more prepared for writing diploma exams, Alberta Education has made a number of resources available at alberta.ca/k-12-provincial-assessment, including examples of questions that were on previous diploma exams.

Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs) will also be administered this year to all Alberta students in Grades 6 and 9. These standardized tests reflect the essentials that all Alberta students are expected to achieve, regardless of school choice or location. More information will be provided to families with children writing these tests from their schools.

Grade 12 Graduation

We are excited that high schools are moving ahead with plans for graduation ceremonies and banquets, with the caution that these events could be changed or modified depending on health measures that may be in place at the time.

School Events and Celebrations

Schools are moving ahead with planning school field trips, events and celebrations. These activities could also be impacted by health measures that may be in place at the time.

No Classes Friday or Monday

  • There are no classes for students on Friday, April 15 for Good Friday and Monday, April 18 for a system-wide non-instructional day. Enjoy the long-weekend.

    Coming Soon

  • May is budget season. As we prepare the CBE's 2022-23 budget to submit to Alberta Education by the end of May, you can provide feedback on our website. Our finance team reads every comment, and will consider your input when making decisions regarding future budgets. In the coming weeks schools will be finalizing their budgets for the next school year.
  • Yellow school bus transportation registration will begin in May. Service levels and fees for the 2022-23 school year will be announced in the coming weeks. If your family is considering using transportation services for the next school year, you must register by the deadline to ensure yellow school bus service for the first day of classes. There is no financial obligation for registration; families have until the fall to cancel without a fee.
