The Calgary Board of Education meets with community leaders, parents, students and other organizations to gain their perspectives, ideas and advice on a variety of important topics. Each of our advisory councils helps us to move towards achieving our mission.
Chief Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council
The Chief Superintendent's Student Advisory Council is comprised of grade 11 students from CBE high schools. Throughout the year, student members meet with the Chief Superintendent of Schools to discuss and share their perspectives on their education. They are ambassadors of student voice and leaders in their school communities.
Elder Advisory Council
Elders are highly respected in their communities, having long discovered their gifts and purposes through their life experiences. Elders bring an understanding of their community’s history and traditional ways. Our CBE Elder Advisory Council was established in October 2010 and includes the following Treaty 7 representation from the following nations:
- Blackfoot
- Métis
- Stoney - Nakoda
- Tsuut’ina
- Cree
Meetings with Elders occur four times per year.

- Increase the visibility of the Arts as a collective of Arts champions
More About The Fine Arts Council
Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC) – Overview
The TAC evolved from two separate groups – one focused on walk zones at schools and the other on a review of the CBE transportation model. In its current form, the committee takes a holistic approach to transportation issues and future projects.
Membership on TAC is by appointment and includes representation from school principals, parents, the city of Calgary, Calgary Police Service, local carriers, and the CBE board of trustees and administration.
Currently there are two sub-committees:
- Safe Student Travel Advisory Group (SSTAG)
- Transportation Working Committee
Safe Student Travel Advisory Group (SSTAG)
Student safety is a priority for the Calgary Board of Education (CBE), and in recognition that this responsibility is also a shared one, in 2018 the CBE established the Safe Student Travel Advisory Group (SSTAG).
The SSTAG brings together professionals passionate about improving student safety and include representatives from the CBE, Calgary Catholic School District, Southland Transportation, City of Calgary, Calgary Police Services, AMA – School Safety Patrol, Ever Active, Safer Roads, and many other organizations. To date the group has completed site visits, reviewed concerns at over 50 schools and identified issues. Each issue is assigned to a group participant to explore, action if feasible, and report back to the group during the regularly scheduled monthly meetings. At each meeting, existing action items are reviewed, and any new concerns are discussed.
CBE Transportation is pleased to chair the SSTAG as yet another way we can support student well-being across the City, this through fostering collaboration and understanding with our community partners.
