The Calgary Board of Education Board of Trustees is seeking volunteers for its Audit Committee.
The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) is the largest school board in Western Canada, serving approximately 115,000 students. It has an operating budget of over one billion dollars. The Audit Committee reports to the Board of Trustees and is comprised of two elected trustees and at least three volunteer individuals external to the Calgary Board of Education.
The primary role of the committee is to assist the Board of Trustees in ensuring the assets of CBE are safeguarded and resources are utilized effectively. The committee oversees the processes for managing and reporting on financial activities and related internal controls. Specific duties of the committee include recommending the appointment of the auditor, reviewing the audit plan, assessing the effectiveness of the auditor and reviewing the year-end financial statements and audit findings.
Volunteers serve on the Committee for three years and attend approximately two meetings per year, with the next meeting expected to take place in May, 2015. The role also involves reviewing financial and audit documents in advance of meetings. The ideal candidate will have a background in public accounting, business or law and demonstrate a commitment to advancing public education in our city. Serving on the committee will allow you to gain valuable experience in financial oversight.
At the CBE, we are committed to achieving the best results for each student, and to ensuring that the guiding principles for all behavior and action of the Calgary Board of Education continue to be:
Students come first;
Learning is our central purpose; and
Public education serves the common good.
Please be a part of the bright future of education in our city by volunteering your time and expertise.
