Message from the Board of Trustees on “Preserving Choice for Children and Youth” Policy

Oct. 30, 2024

UPDATE - Dec. 3, 2024

On Nov. 18, at the fall general meeting of the Alberta School Board Association (ASBA) the 61 member school boards passed a number of position statements to guide provincial advocacy including:

THAT sexual health education remain an “opt out" option for parents in Alberta and that school board autonomy be respected with regards to their own sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression policies

The CBE Board of Trustees voted in favour of this statement and remains concerned about proposed new rules and impacts of this legislation.

On Feb. 1, 2024, the government of Alberta announced policy direction on Preserving Choice for Children and Youth. The premier of Alberta has made it clear that this is a priority for the government.

While the CBE was not consulted on this direction, we have provided feedback highlighting challenges and uncertainty around proposed new rules and impacts. While we await this new legislation, we continue to deliver the Alberta curriculum, and we remain confident in the ability of CBE staff to work collaboratively with families to ensure that each child has the opportunity to thrive at school.

To be clear, we are committed to ensuring each and every student feels welcomed, cared for, respected and safe while at school, no matter who they are or how they identify. This is consistent with our legal obligations under the provincial Education Act and the Alberta Human Rights Act. CBE values are clear that students come first, learning is our central purpose and public education serves the common good.

Parents and guardians, please know that you play a critical role in the education of your children, and it is important that teachers work closely with you to ensure your child succeeds.
