CBE Board of Trustees’ Response to 2024 Provincial Budget Announcement

Mar. 01, 2024

On Feb. 29, the Government of Alberta announced its 2024-25 budget. In the coming weeks, the CBE expects to receive its funding allocation from Alberta Education. We will then have a better understanding of what this means for the CBE and its 140,000+ students.

Over the past two years, the Board of Trustees has strongly advocated for funding to keep pace with growing enrolment. Next year, we expect to welcome more than 7,000 additional students while we continue to support a growing population of students with complex learning needs, including 40,000+ students who are learning English as an additional language. At the same time, all other costs to support our growing system continue to rise.

As our system grows, additional learning spaces are urgently needed. We look forward to details from Alberta Education on new and modernized school requests.

The funding allocation, in addition to approved new schools, will give a better picture of how the provincial government is investing in public education.

The CBE will work towards submitting a balanced budget to Alberta Education by May 31.
